I am a Colombian designer and researcher doing theory and practice work at the intersection of participatory design (PD), science and technology studies (STS), human-computer interaction (HCI), and radical social change. I am a Ph.D candidate at the MIT Media Lab, advised by Prof. Azra Akšamija, Prof. Ethan Zuckerman and Prof. Eden Medina. I work jointly between the MIT Media Lab and the Future Heritage Lab at the Art, Culture and Technology program. I am currently a fellow at the Morningside Academy for Design at MIT.
I use participatory strategies to collaborate with, and support self-determination initiatives in rural contexts. Through ethnographic methods and decolonial lenses, I explore how technological infrastructure takes shape in these remote geographies. My experience allows me dynamically move from fieldwork, to design and deployment of digital and physical prototypes, to social organizing. I publish regularly at conferences such as CSCW, CHI, and PDC, and at critical outlets such as Science for the People or Tech Otherwise. I serve as editor and in leadership roles at some of these venues.I am a co-founder of the Colombian design collective Diversa. We focus on community-based, participatory work on rural technology, education on technology co-design, and digital services offerings for managing local innovation.

I completed my Master's at the MIT Media Lab advised by Prof. Cynthia Breazeal. I did my undergraduate studies in Linguistics advised by Prof. Roberto Perry in the Linguistics Lab at the the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Previously, I have worked with the MIT D-Lab, the MIT Center for Civic Media, and the One Laptop per Child Foundation. Please reach out at pedro (at) reynoldscuellar (dot) comEmail ︎︎︎Bluesky ︎︎︎LinkedIn ︎︎︎

Ancestral Technology
Forms of world-making primarily supporting cultural cohesion, rooted in bounded geography and with a history that lives through collective memory

2021 - Present
MIT Media Lab | Diversa
Colombia#PD #STS
︎ In progress

MotivationFrom university classrooms to sites in the tech industry, all the way to makerspaces and digital communities, the logics of how technology is designed appears to gravitate around similar underlying, dominant ideas: technology should scale, technology should be profitable, technology should aim to be universal, technological innovation is to be unbounded. Often, within the domain of technology design, these imaginaries simultaneously serve as mechanisms to create and maintain conditions of sustained ecological harm, oppressive socio-technical systems, and cultural and socio-economic injustice worldwide. As a counter-narrative, my collaborators and I introduce the concept of ancestral technology: a form of world-making (design) that primarily supports cultural cohesion, rooted in bounded geography and with a history that lives through collective memory. In approaching technology as a tool for sustaining cultural fabric, we argue that a multiplicity of technological trajectories and imaginaries will appear, many of which counter the current dominant frame on technology design described earlier. In considering the possibility of technology as a function of territory, we are faced with an opportunity to escape the universalizing assumptions of all-encompassing, border-free socio-technical systems, and the misleading narrative of globalization. In deepening our commitments to historicity, especially to local histories, we will be better positioned to see technology as a tool to enhance local knowledge and serve local visions of the future.

What we are doingWe are building a series of case studies characterizing ancestral technology across multiple geographies in Colombia through the lens of artifacts locally made by various collectives in rural Colombia including farmers, Indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant enclaves, and fisherman communities. Through ethnographic work, heavily influenced by local and Indigenous research methods, we focus on exploring the roles that certain locally-made artifacts play in expressing and reproducing culture. We highlight the similarities and contradictions in the making, usage and maintenance of these artifacts in relation to dominant forms of technology design.
This work is the central argument of my doctoral dissertation to be published in June 2024, and the underpinnings of an upcoming collaborative book titled: “The Atlas of Ancestral Technology of Colombia”

The value of the “co-”How can we increase our understanding of how participatory design takes place in non-mainstream contexts?
2020 - PresentMIT Media Lab | DiversaColombia#PD #HCI︎ In progress

MotivationParticipatory Design (PD) continues to be leveraged with the purpose of making design processes more democratic, especially when it comes to eliciting and integrating various stakeholders’ input. As participatory design practices and methods continue to expand worldwide, there is a need to increase our understanding of how they can produce benefit/detriment to participants and communities, especially those historically marginalized. We join the call for more assessment and evaluation studies within the PD field. At the same time, it is vital to highlight local, world-making practices from across the globe in order to defuse dominant design narratives. We contribute theory and practice on how these experiences at the margin—yet not marginal— can play a part in expanding concepts and methods within PD.

What we didIn this project, we are providing systematic, multi-year analyses of how participatory experiences in technology design allocate benefits across different groups. We demonstrate how a particular program provided benefits with regard to skill development to local communities’ participants, yet international participants showed greater learning gains overall. We called this an exploration on the “value of the ‘co’”.
In approaching participation critically, we offer the notion of pseudo-participation and illustrate how it unfolds in the context of civic digital platforms. We also provide accounts of participatory projects in Colombia, largely inspired in Indigenous epistemologies, in order to incentivize new practices within the Participatory Design (PD) field. This is the case of the “Saber y Vida” program. Lastly, we offer critical accounts on how experiences like these and the notions they contain, can permeate conceptual traditions in PD. We do this through a speculative analysis of the academic review process.

CabildoXLatAmA space for digital participation in Latin America
2020MIT Media Lab | DiversaArgentina, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Puerto Rico#PD︎ Completed

MotivationIn the face of the challenges that have emerged and been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, collective responses by, with, and for communities have developed in Latin America (e.g., community food banks and open data citizen-led initiatives). Faced with this scenario, the research group Democratic Reconfigurations of the IASS Potsdam has decided to convene a Cabildo por América Latina (CabildoxLatAm), a participatory digital space to learn, strengthen, and design collective responses to the pandemic. The event will bring together civil society actors, governments, communities, and citizens from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Puerto Rico.

Down (from left to right): Instagram posts explaining (1) what a cabildo is, (2) what an “olla comunitaria” (communal pot) is, and (3) schedule for the event

What we didThe CabildoxLatAm was a virtual event held during the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing for agents across different constituencies to deliberate on issues and solutions surrounding the pandemic health emergency, from a grassoots perspective. We provided communication access to the cabildo events via Zoom, as well as telephone lines and via WhatsApp. The cabldo featured spaces and activities geared towards open deliberation, building on new forms of participatory and planetary governance. Some of the main areas discussed during the cabildo included food sovereignty, education, and digital governance.

The mission of the Cabildo is to create a space for horizontal, inclusive, and digital participation where a roadmap for self-management and a unified petition of processes and participatory responses necessary to confront the Covid-19 pandemic will be jointly designed.

Citational JusticeHow do you choose the works you cite when producing knowledge, and what does that choice entail?
2021 - PresentMIT Media LabUSA#STS︎ In progress

MotivationEverything we write, especially within academia, is built on work done by other before us. Yet, language barriers, lack of values and guidelines for equitably representing this work, and implicit biases have given space to the marginalization of other forms of knowledge production from within academic contexts. This effectively leaves fields of research and their researchers without the opportunity to engage with diverse literatures and different forms of discovery, evolution and dissemination of knowledge. Questions around citational justice are not new though. You can read more on this in writings by feminist cultural theorist Sara Ahmed , mobilization by the Cite Black Women Collective, the Citational Practices Challenge initiative led by Profs. Eve Tuck, Rubén Gaztambide-Fernández, and Wayne Yang , and the Teaching Citational Practices group among others.

What we are doingThis is a highly collaborative initiative, started and led by Prof. Neha Kumar at Georgia Tech and Dr. Naveena Karusala. It focuses on drawing attention to this problem, specifically within HCI-related fields. It also provides resources for researchers to better approach citational practices, building on the great work done by others before us. I helped organize and facilitate a series of workshops as part of the Computer-Supported Cooperative Work And Social Computing conference (CSCW), and the Latin American Human-Computer Interaction Conference (LAIHC) in order to invite reflections from researchers across various geographies and disciplines. Together, under the pen name “Citational Justice Collective”, wrote reflection pieces for the XRDS magazine, and the ACM Interactions journal. Prof. Kumar and Dr. Karusala have also written on this for the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems and in public pieces.

Rural Co-design ExperiencesDesigning education strategies to increase value to partnering communities in the context of participatory design projects
2019-2022MIT Media Lab | DiversaColombia#PD #STS︎ Completed

MotivationFor most of its history, the discipline of design has come to be an elitist space: in service to a privileged class, built over technical complexity, and made possible at the expense of planetary harm. In the United States for example, the foundation of the McMicken School of Design in Cincinnati in 1869 launched a wave of design schools, the majority of them created with the purpose of advancing industry’s interest by using design as competitive advantage. The co-op model, currently adopted by a wide range of design programs worldwide, guarantees a tight connection between universities and industries, creating a door for corporate and academic narratives to feed on each other. How can we intercept this circuit? Recent moves towards more inclusive, plural, place-based, and history aware design programs have begun to appear with notable examples in the recent decade. Programs like Carnegie Mellon’s Transition Design and the recently revamped Faculty of Design at the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) serve as cases in point of this transformation in education. This project adds to these alternatives by offering examples of alternative models of design education taking place within higher education institutions.

What we didWe co-designed and implemented a model for an immersive, community-based, participatory experience on technology design: the Co-Design Experience. Inspired by decolonial studies and Indigenous research methods, we expose students to a learning program that centers local knowledge, features local communities as teachers, and exposes participants to a curriculum collaboratively built and informed by partnering collectives. By effectively connecting these programs with long-standing programs and initiatives, we provide a robust model for participatory design experiences that solves the issue of program sustainability.

IDDS: International Development Design Summits (Colombia)Hands-on design experiences that bring together people from all walks of life to create low-cost, practical innovations to improve the lives of people living in poverty
2015-2018Diversa | MIT D-LabColombia (multiple locations)#PD #STS︎ Completed

MotivationAccess to technology in under-resourced contexts remains an important issue —not the only, nor the most pressing one— when confronting the battle against poverty. Lack of access is due to a myriad of variables including purchasing power, availability and appropriateness of technology solutions, and absence of local design and manufacturing capacity. IDDS summits focus on this last aspect by providing a practical experience showcasing how technology design can take place in these contexts. To do this, summits provide a non-formal, hands-on program in adult education to teach the principles of design following a participatory approach. The program emphasizes the practice of identifying and tackling problems collectively. These gatherings galvanize the idea that “working with communities is more powerful than designing solutions for them”. Design summits take place between two weeks to a month and focus on a particular thematic of interest to local communities.

What we didTogether with a network of practitioners and members of the design collective at Diversa, we organized four IDDS design summits across different locations in Colombia. These experiences focused on issues related to urban solid waste management, primary education, climate change adaptation, and new coastal territories. Partnering communities for these summits included waste-pickers cooperatives, municipal government agencies, school networks, civil society natural reserves, regional universities, Indigenous groups, fishermen cooperatives, agroecology farmer collectives, and university students among others. More than 200 participants took place in these summits with more than a third being active members in local partnering communities. More than 20 fully funcional technology projects were developed and implemented including plastic material compactors for solid waste facilities, lightweight push carts for street waste-pickers, low-cost coffee roasters for rural small-scale farmers, solar lamps for remote Indigenous communities, pedal-powered rafts for waste collection across mangrove swamps, among others.
